National Express are recruiting an experienced Lead Technician to join the team, based at our Stansted location. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining the performance and reliability of our fleet. As the main on-site engineer, you will oversee daily maintenance operations, repair vehicle breakdowns, support the Engineering Manager, and ensure high standards of safety, compliance, and efficiency. This role is majority hands-on technical work alongside support of the Engineering Manager
What you'll do:
- Manage all daily vehicle defects and progress the repairs (both internally and through external suppliers)
- Act as the first point of contact for technical issues, offering expertise in diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair
- Ensure all work complies with National Express standards and industry regulations, including DVSA and Health & Safety guidelines
- Provide support for the Engineering Manager by organising all aspects of vehicle maintenance and ensuring efficient workshop operations. This includes scheduling planned maintenance, coordinating reactive repairs, and prioritizing workloads to minimize vehicle downtime
- Collaborate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure timely completion of outsourced repairs while maintaining quality standards
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, ensuring compliance with National Express documentation standards and regulatory requirements
- Assist in managing parts inventory, ensuring the availability of critical components while controlling costs
- Identify and report any recurring defects or patterns, recommending solutions to improve fleet reliability and reduce future issues
- Perform planned and reactive maintenance on vehicles, including mechanical, electrical, and body repairs
- Ensure timely resolution of vehicle defects to minimize downtime and support operational efficiency
- Diagnose and investigate faults on vehicles, where required using specialist diagnostic equipment, to carry out effective, appropriate, sustainable repairs
- Lead on the delivery of vehicles for service and manage the on-the-road performance
- Ensure the workshop is kept clean, organised, and operates to a high standard of housekeeping
- Regularly review health and safety procedures, ensuring they are followed by all team members to minimise risks and maintain a safe working environment
What you'll need:
- IMI Level III Bus and Coach Engineering & Maintenance or Equivalent (including Heavy Vehicles)
- Minimum of 3 years experience of working in a vehicle maintenance environment
- IRTEC Vehicle Inspection
- IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician
- Full CAT D PCV licence or willingness to work towards
- Familiarity with compliance and health and safety regulations related to vehicle maintenance and workshop operations
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
